Gujo: Location & Geography
Gujo is located at the center of Gifu Prefecture and it is also at the center of Japan. Located nearby are Gero, famous for its hot spring, Hida Takayama, Gifu City, well-known for cormorant fishing, and Shirakawa-go, a registered World Heritage Site. The area is 1030.79 square km and the altitude ranged from 110 meters to 1,810 meters above sea level. This difference in altitude presents spectacular mountain views in the northern area while the southern portion enjoys the Nagara River’s beautiful and abundant water. The highland or northern part of Gujo City receives around 2m of snow, while the southern part hardly has any snow at all in winter. Natural variety is one of the attractive points of Gujo.
Tourism in Gujo
Gujo City is a great natural tourist spot with many beautiful mountains and rivers. To make the most of this beautiful natural setting, Ecotourism is highly recommended. Touring flower gardens and viewing the fall foliage is fascinating from the spring until fall. It is also extremely interesting to visit any of the historical sites or places that date back to over 1300 years ago. The Gujo and Shirotori dances, representative traditional Japanese dances with an approximately four hundred year history, are performed during the summer. About 450,000 dancers wearing yukata, a type of summer kimono, and geta or wooden clogs make a loud sound while dancing. Outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, rafting, etc. take advantage of the natural setting of Gujo. You may also want to participate in programs prepared as a trial for beginners.

There are twelve hot springs in Gujo all of which have different characteristics. The hot springs can be enjoyed in many different facilities with or without staying overnight.

Food in Gujo
Many seasonal culinary specialties can be found in Gujo. The “Gujo ayu or sweet fish”, is a summer specialty that is registered as a trade brand. "Okumino curry" uses Gujo miso as a spice. "Wild boar nabe" is popular in winter, as is "Kei chan," a spicy home style chicken dish.
Event information
In addition to being known for its late-summer dance, Gujo also has many interesting historical festivals held throughout the four seasons.

It takes about two hours from Central Japan International Airport,Noto airport,Toyama Airport and Komatsu Airport by car. Public transportation by train, bus, and taxi is also available.
